Account Information

When you sign in with Apple or Google, we receive your email address and a unique identifier associated with your account. We use this to create and manage your Messy account.

Reading Behavior

We collect information about how you interact with stories in the app, including:

• Stories you read, complete, like, and save
• Categories you read most
• Reading session duration
• Your daily reading streak

We use this data to personalize your For You feed and improve your reading experience.

Analytics and Product Improvement Data

We use PostHog, a product analytics platform, to collect anonymized data about how you use the App. This may include:

• Screens and features you visit
• Buttons and interactions you tap
• Session duration and frequency
• App performance and crash reports
• Recordings of user sessions (Session Replay)

This data is used solely to understand how users interact with the App and to improve its features and performance. PostHog data is anonymized where possible and is not used for advertising or sold to third parties.

Subscription Information

If you subscribe to Messy, your subscription status and purchase history are managed by Apple's App Store and RevenueCat. We receive confirmation of your subscription status to grant access to the app. We do not store your payment card information.

User Generated Content

If you post comments in the app, those comments are stored in our database and visible to other users. You are responsible for the content of your comments.

Device Information

We collect a device identifier for the purpose of sending push notifications if you have enabled them. This identifier is not linked to your personal identity.

We use the information we collect to:

• Create and manage your account
• Personalize your story feed based on your reading behavior
• Track your reading streak and stats
• Process and verify your subscription
• Send push notifications you have opted into
• Moderate comments and enforce our community guidelines
• Improve the app and content library through analytics
• Analyze product usage patterns to guide development decisions
• Respond to your support requests

We do not sell your personal data. We do not share your data with advertisers. We share limited data with the following service providers solely to operate the app:

• Supabase — our database and authentication provider. Stores your account, reading behavior, comments, and streak data.
• RevenueCat — manages subscription status and purchase verification.
• OneSignal — sends push notifications to your device if you have enabled them.
• PostHog — product analytics and session replay. Collects anonymized usage data to help us understand and improve the app. PostHog may store data on servers in the United States. See PostHog's Privacy Policy at posthog.com/privacy for details.
• Apple / Google — handle sign in authentication.

Each of these providers has their own privacy policy governing their use of your data.

We retain your account and reading data for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account through the app, we will delete your personal data within 30 days, except where we are required to retain it for legal or regulatory purposes.

Comments you have posted may remain visible after account deletion unless you delete them individually before deleting your account.

Analytics data collected by PostHog is retained in accordance with PostHog's data retention policies.

We send push notifications to remind you about your reading streak, alert you to new story drops, and notify you about trending stories. You can disable all notifications or specific notification types in the Profile section of the app or in your iPhone Settings.

We use PostHog's Session Replay feature to record anonymized recordings of how users interact with the App. These recordings help us identify usability issues and improve the user experience. Session Replay data may capture screen interactions, taps, and navigation flows, but does not capture passwords, payment information, or other sensitive personal data. You may opt out of session replay by contacting us at the email below.

Messy is rated 17+ and is not intended for users under the age of 17. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 17. If you believe a minor has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it promptly.

You have the right to:

• Access the personal data we hold about you
• Request correction of inaccurate data
• Request deletion of your data by deleting your account in the app
• Opt out of push notifications at any time
• Opt out of analytics data collection by contacting us
• Request a copy of your data by contacting us

California residents have additional rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA). To exercise any of these rights, contact us at the email below.

We use industry-standard security measures to protect your data including encrypted connections (HTTPS), row-level security on our database, and secure authentication through Apple and Google. However, no method of transmission over the internet is 100% secure and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of significant changes by updating the date at the top of this page. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.
